Titre : Autonomous machines and consciousness
Résumé:
Autonomous machines, like robots and self-driving cars operate and co-operate in the real-world, coping with unpredictable external phenomena and error-prone technology. We model them as cyber-physical system controlled by universal processors implementing “minimal machine consciousness understanding.” The system operates with full awareness of the state of its components and its environment, enabling it to construct an up-to-date world model. Based on the current model and the cognitive state, a prediction of the future expected situation can be made, enabling the machine to determine what to do. We will present some details about the model, define and justify our machine versions of consciousness and understanding and describe their computational realization. We argue that minimal machine consciousness and understanding leads to more trustworthy, safer and more reliable systems, increasing their behavioral flexibility and autonomy in varying environments and strengthening their resilience to operation or cooperation failures.

Jiří Wiedermann belongs to the first generation of pioneers in computer science in former Czechoslovakia. In the recent years he focuses mainly on algorithms and models for AI inspired by modeling human higher-level abilities such as machine consciousness, understanding and other semantic properties of AI systems.
